F5000 Drivers Association - October 2007 News Release

Thunder on the Horizon!!!

The Formula 5000 Drivers Association in concert with other racing organizations is working to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Formula 5000 in America. The SCCA started the professional single seat series for 5-liter single seaters in 1968.

Formula 5000 40th Anniversary

We are delighted to tell you that we have received commitments from three racing organizations to hold a feature race of only Formula 5000 cars as part of their race events in 2008. These venues are:

2008 F5000 Reunion Races
  • May30 - June 1, 2008 at Infineon Raceway with HMSA for the Wine Country Classic event
  • July 17-20, 2008 at Road America for the Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman
  • September 4-7, 2008 at Watkins Glen with SVRA for the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix
As we build up to these events, I am certain that other racing organizations will invite F5000 cars to participate in other events. We encourage all of you to get your Formula 5000 cars out in large numbers during 2008 and get them well sorted out of the three main events listed above.

New Zealand
Cars & Races

We are also in extensive discussions with our F5000 brethren from
New Zealand. they have given us strong indications that morethan 10 Formula 5000 cars could come from New Zealand for the September 2008 event. Others from the UK/Europe and Australia may join them as well. Many of you know that Formula 5000 car racing is very popular in New Zealand and Australia with of 20 cars.

Our New Zealand F5000 friends also have extended an invitation for us in the
USA to join them for two weekends of racing in 2008 as part of their Tasman Revival Series. The dates are:
  • January 25-27, 2008 at Pukekohe Circuit near Auckland, NZ, where the Tasman series ran.
  • February 1-3, 2008 at Taupo Circuit, NZ where the A1GP competed
  • SEE DETAIL SCHEDULE BELOW
They will waive the entry fees and will assist with customs and transportation within New Zealand free of charge. They anticipate television coverage of the events.

None of these events in 2008 will be successful without a broad participation of Formula 5000 owners and drivers in the
USA and other countries. We want to see some very large grids of F5000 cars like in the old days.

May 16-18, 2008 at Thunderhill (CSRG) - CSRG plans to host a Formula 5000 racing group and perhaps a separate feature race if sufficient F5000 cars sign up for this event. The event offers a great opportunity to start the F5000 40th Anniversary Celebration and warm up the car and the body for other upcoming F5000 events in 2008. Thunderhill is a great track for F5000.

May 31 - June 1, 2008 at Infineon Raceway (Infineon) - The Formula 5000 Drivers Association and General Racing have organized feature races of only F5000 cars at Infineon in conjunction with  the Wine Country Classic event to kick off the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Formula 5000 in 2008. In addition to a weekend of racing, an F5000 driver reunion and other celebration events are planned. You don't want to miss it.

July 17 - 20, 2008 at Road America (RA) -
This is the second main race event of 2008 organized by the Formula 5000 Drivers Association in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of F5000. Great Track for F5000 cars, 4 mile long track with three long straights, elevation changes and challenging turns. In conjunction with Road America we have scheduled F5000 only feature races for the weekend. In addition, we will have a celebration tent, Original Series Drivers Reunion, Autograph sessions with Champion Drivers from the original series and other celebration events. This is a premier vintage racing event you also don't want to miss, which also includes Can-Am and Historic F1 races.

Tentative: August 29 - September 1, 2008 at Lime Rock Park (LimeRock) - Still a tentative event on the Formula 5000 Drivers Association schedule, this event would be an added reason to go racing on the East Coast when combined with the following weekend event at Watkins Glen. Lime Rock is a short track, but fast in a beautiful park-like, country-side surrounding. No racing on Sunday, but a good day to relax and take in the car show and visit the area. Final race is on Monday, Labor Day, September 1.

September 4-7, 2008 at Watkins Glen with SVRA Zippo Vintage Festival (SVRA) - This is the third and pinnacle main race event of 2008 organized by the Formula 5000 Drivers Association in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of F5000. In conjunction with SVRA we have scheduled F5000 only feature races for the weekend. In addition, we will have a celebration tent, Original Series Drivers Reunion, Autograph sessions with Champion Drivers from the original series and other celebration events. This is another premier vintage racing event with lots of American Iron you need to attend.

HSR Announces New Historic Formula Race Class

HSR has announced a separate class for pre-1986 formula cars. Previously older formula cars like F5000 would run in the BOSS Series with more modern Indy and other formula cars making it difficult for older cars to compete. HSR has also established the Gilles Villeneuve Trophy for the annual winner of this class. See further detail in the related link to the right.
